What to do in the event of death

The loss of a loved one is a difficult time in which several steps must be taken rapidly. Our checklist outlines the main actions to be taken.

Contact Les Résidences Funéraires Goyer. The funeral director will take the necessary measures to pick up the remains and you will then make an appointment.


During your appointment, your family counsellor will plan out the details of the funeral with you:

  • Date, location, length and type of tribute paid to remains
  • Religious or secular ceremony
  • Funeral proceedings
  • Type and location of burial

What you must bring to your appointment with the funeral director:

  • Clothing, undergarments and socks (excluding shoes) of the deceased
  • Glasses and dental prostheses
  • Makeup (lipstick, nail polish, etc.)
  • Jewellery and personal items (rosary, etc.) to place in the casket
  • Recent photograph
  • Health insurance card, social insurance card and other civil status documents (birth certificate, marriage certificate)
  • List of those in mourning to be mentioned in the death notice (the director will help you write the notice)

If you so wish, the funeral director may also handle the following:

  • Ordering floral arrangements
  • Booking the reception hall
  • Recommending and supervising a caterer
  • Providing information regarding the purchase and engraving of a monument
  • Preparing thank-you cards or bookmarks

We assist you in completing government paperwork.

  • Form from the Directeur de l'état civil for a copy of the act of death
  • Régie des rentes du Québec forms (QPP)
  • Old Age Security form

  • Cancelling the health insurance card
  • Submitting the attestation of death to settle the succession
